“Sometimes you can tell a large story with a tiny subject.”
A selection of part of the landscape can often create a much simpler and stronger image.
Many such images in this genre exclude the horizon line and sky, relying on composition only to create the interest, they also tend to avoid any spectacular lighting. Typically the images are quieter and invite the viewer to think about a small area of the landscape. The subject and composition are also harder to find and the photographer can often wander a long way in search of that elusive composition. Unlike the grand wider view, the chances of any other photographer chancing upon your composition is minimal. It can also be more satisfying knowing that it represents your own personal vision, rather than the general view that others might shoot.
The intimate landscape is a unique and personal way of seeing through seeking out the detail in a scene and the elements that make that particular place special, and they have the ability to convey the experience of not just seeing what is there, they become an interpretation of what you saw.
The intimate landscape offers the photographer the possibility to produce images that are more personal and creative. Rather than answers provided by the photographer, the more abstracted images can pose questions of the viewer, leaving room for the viewer to bring their own story when looking at an image.
